I’ve been working on a complete redesign for JoyofSpex, and it’s coming along nicely (but taking a while.) Part of the new site is designing a new logo. The old logo (or, actually it may be more accurately considered a “wordmark”) was thrown together in a few hours because we had to rush to get the first site up for a reason that will be a blog entry of it’s own.
The new site is going to be much simpler, cleaner, contain larger videos that will be available in multiple formats, and will add a lot of features that people have been asking for. The current site is at least 5 years old, so the time has come.
I wanted the new logo to match the simplicity of the new site, but also be fun — because, hey, naked girls in glasses are fun!
Also, the old wordmark gave us no way to use a cute little small squarish icon – which is actually the “logo.” So I wanted to develop something that we could use really small that would reflect our brand. These little tiny graphics can be used everywhere, including the “favicon.ico” graphics found in web browsers, right up there in the toolbar.
I spent a day with a general idea in mind, and at the end, I came up with this:

The “Y” sandwiched between the two “O” letters gave me an opportunity to make them look like the lenses of a pair of glasses, and I added the red line below to make the face a little more obvious. (It’s smiling at you.)

Now all I have to do is build the rest of the website around it.

Ava never did anything like this before. She was 20 years old at the time and she definitely looked innocent. She was a dancer (like, ballet, not lap) and thought it might be fun. I agreed with her. We met up in a studio in Oakland and did the shoot. Two still sets and one video.
In a situation like this, you never really know how the person is going to react to the experience. As a total newbie, would she be comfortable with my lens going nearly microscopic on her pussy? Would she have a problem with spreading herself wide open? (By the way, personally, I dislike the whole spreading-and-stretching thing. A girl would never naturally do that in the privacy of her own home, she would only do it if there was a guy in the room asking her to do it. When I see these types of images, I always start thinking of the guy shooting the picture — who thinks this pose is important — instead of the girl. And if I am looking at porn, I don’t want to be suddenly thinking of a dude. But hey, dudes do seem to love this stuff, so ok, I guess I’ll shoot it.)

She was a little nervous at the start. But she found a bottle of Jack Daniels somewhere in the studio, opened it up and took a few sips (!) and got comfortable and really into it. I must admit, I’m such a goodie-two-shoes, I was nervous that we just allowed a 20 year-old to consume some booze on the set, but then I remembered what I did when I was that age, and shit, drink away!
This shoot was a huge amount of fun. She was enthusiastic and really into it. She seemed to have a very natural way of holding and positioning her body, and was really working with me to make these images something great.
I the end I think we actually shot some fun images. Not that they’re super awesome and I am claiming to be the world’s most awesome photographer, but the whole experience was fun for all of us and I think it shows in the results.
I always appreciated how her body was so nice and natural. So I was totally shocked to see that she changed all of that all through surgical procedures. Some time after her first shoot with me, she changed her porn stage name to “Indiana.” I was surfing around one day and I found her images on another site. So sad, really. I wish she would have left herself alone. Oh well.

A few years ago I was able to do a shoot with Lena Ramon, someone who has probably done just about everything there is to do in the porn industry. I saw pictures of her somewhere, and she was wearing glasses. That’s all I needed – my excuse to finally do a shoot with Lena. Tracking her down wasn’t the easiest thing, but after about a year, it finally happened. She had us all laughing through the entire session, and I had a great time.

We thought it would be fun to shoot a Christmas-themed set, so we could make the holiday season oh-so-bright. We asked her to stand by a little Christmas tree, and play with garland and bows and other highly-Christian objects — even though she’s Jewish. She laughed at the idea, but was happy to go along with it. All in good fun!

This is a pretty funny story (well, at least I think so.)
In one of our model recruitment efforts, we got in touch with Chanta Rose. She has modeled in many other places before, but never in her glasses. Seems like almost every adult website will ask a model to remove her glasses if they wear them. (FOOLS, I say!)

The shoot was going to be in my apartment. When it came time to make arrangements with her, we gave her the address and realized that she lived RIGHT NEXT DOOR to me! Seriously, right on the other side of my living room wall. I had no idea.
The funny part is that for the first few weeks of living in that apartment, before I internet connectivity was installed, I was actually stealing someone’s open wireless network. It turned out to be hers.
What I like best, though, is that I can actually say that I’ve actually truly shot “the girl next door.”
She’s also a bondage expert, and has a few websites of her own, including a LiveJournal page.

I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph Anna twice in the past few years. The original shoot was really fun, and then about 2 years later, we met up again for another. That shoot was even more fun – she is really into this stuff, and I think that makes all the difference with a model. If everyone is have fun during the shoot, it always produces the best work.
Anna runs her own website, too – and you should definitely check it out. There are so many nice images on her site — like really well-done ones — it is impressive. Equally impressive is her never-ending creativity, constantly re-inventing herself, and obviously continuing to have fun while celebrating her kinky geekness.

That image (above) shows off her glasses pretty well, but I think it’s how she is looking at the camera that I like best. We shot these pictures in the living room of my apartment.

I guess I have a thing for hair getting messed up and hanging in a girl’s face because I like this image. She’s not looking at the camera, which is a nice break, and you can almost sort of imagine that you’re right there with her as she’s getting dressed (or undressed.)

We did this shoot in my kitchen. Seriously. Not exactly the sexiest place in the house, but hey, if you have the right model, it will always work out. And in this case, I think it did. By the time I shot these pictures, I moved into a different (larger) apartment, just down the hall from the previous one.

She climbed on top of my kitchen table, and I’m really glad it didn’t collapse. (I bought the thing at Ikea, and you know how you have to assemble all that stuff yourself? Well, I am not so good at following directions – especially those directions with pictures only. Have you noticed there are no words on the Ikea assembly instructions?) Luckily, she is light enough and we all survived.

I’ve shot a good amount of video for JoyofSpex. One way of promoting the site, and the videos, is to create these fun little 20-second previews. Sometimes editing them down to just 20 seconds can be a serious challenge. But every once in a while, when you’ve got some good content to play with, it can be fun.

That was a fun shoot!
I was looking through my image archive earlier today, and I ended up looking at images of Gala, the first model I ever shot for JoyofSpex. Brought back some really interesting memories. I didn’t have anything “real” in terms of equipment. Just a Canon PowerShot G4 and few AA battery-powered flash units being triggered by an infrared sensor atop the camera.

Things have really changed since then. I went through a series of cameras, a series of lights, a list of locations, and a host of entertaining stories that I’m looking forward to sharing. It seems like every photo, and every photo shoot, has a story with it.
